Salmon Patties: A Delicious and Nutritious Classic

Salmon patties are a beloved dish that combines the rich, flavorful taste of salmon with a crispy, golden exterior. This recipe is perfect for a quick weeknight dinner or a satisfying lunch, offering a great way to incorporate more fish into your diet. With simple ingredients and straightforward preparation, salmon patties are both easy to make and incredibly versatile. Let’s explore how to create these delicious patties step by step.

Ingredients

To prepare these delectable salmon patties, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 1 (14.75 oz.) can Alaskan pink salmon
  • 2 green onions, minced
  • 1 raw egg
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1/2 cup self-rising flour (White-Lily recommended)
  • 1/8 cup self-rising cornmeal mix (White-Lily recommended)
  • Option: 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper (for a spicy kick)
  • Cooking oil (for frying)

Directions

1. Preparing the Salmon

Begin by opening the can of Alaskan pink salmon and draining the liquid. Transfer the salmon to a large bowl. If desired, pick out and discard the bones and skin. Some people prefer to leave the skin and bones in for added texture and flavor, but this is entirely up to your personal taste.

2. Mixing the Ingredients

Add the minced green onions, raw egg, salt, and pepper to the bowl with the salmon. If you like a bit of heat, add the optional 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Using a fork, mix the ingredients well until they are fully combined. The egg will help bind the mixture, while the flour and cornmeal will provide structure and a crispy texture.

3. Heating the Oil

Pour cooking oil into a skillet until it reaches about 1/2 inch high. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it is hot. To test if the oil is ready, drop a small amount of the salmon mixture into the oil. If it floats and sizzles immediately, the oil is hot enough for frying.

4. Forming and Frying the Patties

Using a 1/8 cup measure, scoop the salmon mixture and place each clump of batter into the hot oil. Fry the patties in batches to avoid overcrowding the skillet. Cook each patty for about 3 minutes on one side, then flip it using a fork or spatula and press down gently to flatten. Fry for an additional 2 minutes or until the patties are golden brown and cooked through.

5. Draining and Serving

Once the patties are done, use tongs to transfer them to a platter or plate lined with paper towels. This will help drain any excess oil and keep the patties crispy. Serve the salmon patties hot, accompanied by two vegetables of your choice for a complete meal.

Tips for Perfect Salmon Patties

  • Choosing Salmon: Using Alaskan pink salmon ensures a rich, flavorful base. Fresh salmon can also be used if preferred.
  • Binding the Mixture: The egg acts as a binder, but if your mixture feels too loose, add a bit more flour or cornmeal to achieve the desired consistency.
  • Oil Temperature: Maintaining the correct oil temperature is crucial. If the oil is too hot, the patties will burn on the outside before cooking through. If it’s too cold, the patties will absorb too much oil and become greasy.
  • Spice Level: Adjust the cayenne pepper according to your heat preference. For a milder flavor, you can omit it altogether.

Nutritional Benefits

Salmon patties are not only delicious but also packed with nutrients:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for heart health.
  • Protein: Each patty provides a good amount of protein, essential for muscle repair and growth.
  • Vitamins and Minerals: Salmon is rich in vitamins B12 and D, as well as minerals like selenium and potassium.

Serving Suggestions

Salmon patties can be enjoyed in various ways:

  • As a Main Dish: Serve with a side of steamed vegetables, a fresh salad, or mashed potatoes for a balanced meal.
  • In a Sandwich: Place a patty in a bun with lettuce, tomato, and tartar sauce for a tasty sandwich.
  • With Dips: Serve with tartar sauce, aioli, or a lemon dill sauce for added flavor.

Variations and Enhancements

  • Herb Variations: Add fresh herbs like dill, parsley, or cilantro to the salmon mixture for a burst of freshness.
  • Cheese Addition: Incorporate some grated Parmesan or cheddar cheese into the mixture for a cheesy twist.
  • Different Flours: Experiment with different types of flour, such as almond flour or whole wheat flour, for varied textures and flavors.

Storing and Reheating

If you have leftovers, store the salmon patties in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place the patties in a skillet over medium heat until warmed through, or use an oven preheated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 10 minutes. Avoid using the microwave as it can make the patties soggy.

Conclusion

Salmon patties are a versatile and nutritious dish that can be enjoyed by everyone. With their crispy exterior and flavorful, moist interior, they make a delightful meal that is both easy to prepare and satisfying. Whether served as a main course, in a sandwich, or with your favorite dipping sauce, these patties are sure to become a family favorite. So gather your ingredients, follow these simple steps, and enjoy the delicious taste of homemade salmon patties.
