Description
Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast, also known as “S.O.S.” or “Sh** on a Shingle,” is a classic comfort food dish consisting of creamy, savory beef served over toasted bread. It’s a hearty and satisfying meal that’s perfect for breakfast or brunch.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 jar of dried beef slices, rinsed and chopped
- 4 tbsp butter
- 4 tbsp flour
- Pinch of cayenne pepper
- 2 cups milk
- Sea salt and freshly cracked pepper, to taste
- Bread, toasted
Instructions
- Rinse the dried beef slices thoroughly and pat them dry with a paper towel. Chop them into small, bite-sized pieces and set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and cayenne pepper, whisking continuously until smooth and cooked through, about 45 seconds.
- Slowly pour in the milk while whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Allow the mixture to simmer until slightly thickened.
- Add the chopped beef to the saucepan and stir to combine. Cook for a few minutes until the sauce is thickened to your desired consistency.
- Season the creamy beef mixture with sea salt and freshly cracked pepper, adjusting to taste.
- Serve the creamy chipped beef over toasted bread immediately.
Notes
- Adjust the amount of cayenne pepper according to your preference for spiciness.
- You can use fresh beef instead of dried beef if preferred.
- This dish is best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in the refrigerator for a day or two.
